Khargone. The Quit India Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi from Bombay (Mumbai) on 9 August 1942 spread with great zeal and enthusiasm in the Nimar region. 68 revolutionaries from Nimar were involved in this movement, who were arrested and imprisoned in Khargone’s Mandleshwar District Jail. However, even the four walls of the prison could not stop this fight for freedom.
According to historians, the revolutionaries imprisoned in the jail continued the movement from within the jail and broke the jail door and came out on 2 October 1942. As soon as they came out, they went to the clock tower and celebrated Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. This incident ignited the flames of freedom struggle in the region. This incident has been indelibly recorded in the pages of history.
what was the whole incident
History expert Durgesh Kumar Rajdeep told Local 18 that by joining the Quit India Movement, the revolutionaries of Nimar strongly opposed the British. Since, at that time this area was a part of the Holkar state and the Holkar administration was under the influence of the British Government. During that time Mandleshwar used to be a district.
Strategy to break the prison door
Rajdeep tells that the revolutionaries asked the jailor for permission to celebrate Gandhiji’s birthday in jail on 2 October 1942. The jailor sent the application to the Holkar administration. But, permission was not granted. Then the revolutionaries made a strategy and on 2 October at 7 pm, shouting slogans, broke the huge wooden door built on the western side and came out.

Along with other revolutionaries of the city, they reached the historic Ghantaghar Chowk via Jail Road, Keaton Bazaar, MG Marg. They sang bhajans here the whole night. The next morning, after sunrise, they hoisted the tricolour and returned to jail. However, in the meantime, when DIG of Holkar State Abdul Rashid Khan (grandfather of film actor Salman Khan) came to know about the jailbreak, he tried to stop the revolutionaries at the bus stand with the police force. He also fired in the air from a pistol, but even then the revolutionaries did not get scared and moved ahead shouting slogans. The collector and SP also came from Khargone, but they too could not stop them.
